Today on May 4, 2023, there will be local elections across the UK. The elections will take place in all areas of England, Scotland, and Wales, with voters choosing their local councillors and mayors. However, this year’s local elections will have a significant change, as the government has introduced new ID requirements for voters. Under the new rules, voters in England, Scotland, and Wales will be required to show photo identification in order to vote in person at polling stations.
The government argues that this will help prevent electoral fraud, which they claim is a growing problem in the UK. The ID requirements will vary depending on where a voter lives. In England and Wales, voters will need to show one of several types of ID, including a passport, a driving licence, or a senior citizen’s bus pass. In Scotland, voters will be able to use their national identity card, a driving licence, or a passport.
