02 February 2023
It’s LGBT+ History Month, a month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history, as well as a means of raising awareness for the issues faced by LGBTQ+ people. The month of February has been dedicated to LGBT+ History Month in the UK since 2005. February was chosen to coincide with the abolition of Section 28, which formerly stated that local authorities weren’t allowed to “intentionally promote homosexuality”. This year marks 20 years since Section 28.
The theme of LGBT+ History Month this year is ‘Behind the Lens’, celebrating LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to cinema and film from behind the lens. Directors, cinematographers, screenwriters, producers, animators, costume designers, special effects, makeup artists, lighting directors, choreographers and more.
There are more than 1,500 events are taking place across the country throughout February and March.
